This lecture will allow you to discover French cultural history during the 20th century. The lecture will cover various themes such as art, literature, museums and fashion which give France its own special culture.

Congratulations, you have just been admitted to Sciences Po. The next few
years are going to be of significant importance for two reasons: Firstly, because these are important years. You are about to enter a multicultural institution,
where over one-third of students are international. I would encourage you to make the most of this rare opportunity not only to improve your language skills but above all to embrace new ways of thinking and living, and to set yourself new life
goals. Lecturers, professionals and academics will help you in this respect by broadening your intellectual horizons. Secondly, because these are years of discovery. For some of you, these will be the first time you have lived in Paris.
We are lucky to be located in the heart of the city, in Saint Germain des Prés, a district famous for its intellectual spirit. One of the many advantages of studying here is the garden situated within the very walls of Sciences Po; it is the ideal place to discuss with fellow students and to read over the summer months.
I hope that you will make the most of your time here; one day you will surely look back on it as one of the most memorable periods of your student life. Feel free to let us know about your achievements and your problems, the things you like, and the

In the heart of Paris, our walls tell a story
Sciences Po a le privilège d’être situé dans l’un des plus
agréables et prestigieux quartiers de Paris, Saint Germain des
Prés. Depuis le 17ème siècle, le quartier est le foyer du monde
littéraire et artistique parisien. Des peintres comme Delacroix
et Manet, des écrivains tels que Racine et Balzac vont ainsi, au
fil des siècles, forger l’identité de ce quartier. Cette tradition
se perpétuera, qui fera de Saint Germain des Prés, au milieu
du 20ème siècle, le centre de la vie culturelle et artistique de
Paris
Ses trois cafés « Les Deux Magots », « Le Flore » et la
« Brasserie Lipp », véritables symboles de la culture parisienne,
seront le centre de rencontres et de discussions. Dans ces cafés
où foisonnent débats, cercles et prix littéraires se croiseront ou
se succèderont aussi bien des écrivains comme Jean-Paul Sartre
et Simone de Beauvoir, que des chanteurs comme Jacques Brel,
Georges Brassens ou Serge Gainsbourg.
Au coeur de Saint Germain des Prés, qui trouve sa prolongation
naturelle dans le quartier des ministères et de l’Assemblée
Nationale, se trouve Sciences Po, composé non pas d’un
campus unique, mais d’une série de bâtiments qui ponctuent le
quartier de sa présence. Plusieurs d’entre eux étaient à l’origine
des hôtels particuliers, certains datant du 17ème siècle. Tous
portent en eux l’histoire de Paris, qu’ils laissent encore entrevoir
par leurs façades, escaliers, plafonds, miroirs ou cheminées.
Sciences Po is located in one of the most
renowned neighbourhoods of the city, Saint
Germain des Prés. Since the 17th century,
the district has been the centre of literary
and artistic life in Paris. Famous painters
and writers such as Delacroix and Manet,
Racine and Balzac, have left their mark here.
Today, art and culture continue to flourish in
this part of Paris.
Three of its best-known cafés, ‘Les Deux
Magots’, ‘Le Flore’ and the ‘Brasserie Lipp’
are authentic symbols of Parisian culture.
The elite of philosophy and music met in
these cafés, Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone
de Beauvoir, Jacques Brel, Georges Brassens
and Serge Gainsbourg to name but a few.
At walking distance from all the ministries
and the Assemblée Nationale, the French
Parliament, Sciences Po is well integrated
into the district. Its buildings are located
in adjacent streets creating a unique urban
campus atmosphere. Many of these locations
used to be private residences, some of them
built in the 17th century. They are all part of
the history of the city. Visitors will appreciate
looking at their façades, stairs, ceilings,
mirrors and chimneys.

La carte de séjour
Tous les étudiants qui viennent étudier à Sciences Po
pour une année entière et qui ne sont pas issus d’un
des pays membres de l’Union Européenne doivent
demander une carte de séjour afin de pouvoir résider
en France. Sciences Po met en place un service de
liaison entre la Préfecture de Police de Paris et les
étudiants afin de leur éviter de se déplacer euxmêmes
à la Préfecture. Ce service est offert par la
Direction des Affaires Internationales et des Echanges
(DAIE) de Sciences Po.

Attention, ce service traite uniquement les demandes de
carte de séjour pour les étudiants qui vivent à Paris « intramuros
» (code postal qui commence par 75). Les étudiants
qui habitent en Ile-de-France peuvent se connecter sur le
site de la préfecture de leur lieu de résidence pour obtenir
des informations sur les démarches à effectuer.
The ‘carte de séjour’
Upon arrival, all non-European Union nationals
coming to study in France for one whole year must
apply for a ‘carte de séjour’ (residency permit).
Sciences Po’s International Office provides a liaison
service with the ‘Préfecture de Police de Paris’, so
that students can obtain this card directly at Sciences
Po.

Please note that this service is only offered to students
living in Paris (postcode beginning with 75). Students living
outside of Paris, in the Ile-de-France area, should go to
the website of the Préfecture of their zone of residence for
information about how to obtain the ‘carte de séjour’.
Visas
Si vous avez besoin d’un visa pour entrer en France, il est conseillé d’en faire la demande très à l’avance car cela peut prendre beaucoup de temps. Vous pourrez obtenir en ligne, sur votre « espace étudiant », rubrique accueil administratif, un certificat d’admission que vous devrez présenter à l’Ambassade de France ou au Centre pour les études en France (CEF) de votre lieu de résidence afin d’obtenir le visa. De plus, vous avez reçu de notre part une lettre d’admission qui pourra également vous être utile.

Les Centres pour les Etudes en France (CEF)
Les Centres pour les Etudes en France (CEF), présents
dans une vingtaine de pays, offrent des informations
sur les études en France, centralisent les procédures de
candidature et facilitent l’obtention des visas étudiant.
La procédure d’admission par les CEF a un coût variable
entre 70€ et 230€, selon les pays, mais le coût du visa
étudiant est réduit de moitié.

Centres pour les Etudes en France (CEF)
The CEFs, present in more than twenty countries around
the world, offer information on studying in France,
administer the application process centrally and assist
students in obtaining a visa.
The admission procedure through the CEFs costs between
€70 and €230 depending on the country; however the cost
for a student visa is half the normal price.
La sécurité sociale
En France, tous les étudiants âgés de moins de 28 ans doivent
obligatoirement s’inscrire à la sécurité sociale étudiante. Cette
inscription est valable toute l’année universitaire et coûte
195€ (tarif pour 2008-2009).
Il existe des dérogations pour les étudiants français de moins
de 20 ans et les étudiants membres de l’espace économique
européen (EEE), disposant de la carte européenne d’assurance
maladie en cours de validité. Cette carte doit être demandée
15 jours à un mois avant votre départ pour la France auprès de
votre organisme local de sécurité sociale.
Les étudiants boursiers du CROUS et les boursiers Eiffel sont
exonérés de cette cotisation. Les étudiants bénéficiaires de la
bourse Emile-Boutmy doivent payer cette cotisation.
Les étudiants âgés de moins de 28 ans, qui n’appartiennent
pas à un pays membre de l’EEE, doivent obligatoirement
souscrire à la sécurité sociale étudiante et payer la cotisation,
même s’ils disposent d’une assurance privée. Ne pouvant pas
être affiliés par Sciences Po à la sécurité sociale étudiante,
les étudiants âgés de plus de 28 ans doivent présenter une
assurance privée couvrant tous les risques pendant toute
l’année universitaire (1er septembre 2009 - 30 septembre
2010).
Social security
In France, every student under 28 years old is required to
register for the student social security system. Registration
is valid for the whole year and costs €195 (2008-2009).
The only exceptions to this obligation are: French students
under 20 years old and students from the European
Economic Area who are holders of the European health
insurance card. This card should be requested at the social
security office in your country of residence, at least 2 weeks
before travelling to France.
Students who have been awarded a CROUS or Eiffel
scholarship are exempt from paying for social security.
However, this does not apply to students with an Emile-
Boutmy scholarship.
Students under 28 years old from a country outside of the
European Economic Area must subscribe to the student
social security system and pay for it, whether they have
private insurance or not.
Students over 28 years old are not eligible for the student
social security system through Sciences Po. They are
therefore required to take out fully comprehensive private
insurance. This insurance must cover the full study-period
from September 1st 2009 to September 30th 2010.

La mutuelle
La mutuelle vient en complément
de la sécurité sociale et permet des
remboursements plus avantageux des
dépenses médicales (consultations,
médicaments etc.). L’adhésion à la
mutuelle n’est pas obligatoire. Le
montant de l’adhésion varie de 84€ à
340€ par an (tarif 2008-2009). Tous
les étudiants âgés de moins de 28 ans
peuvent y souscrire.

Le Programme d’Accueil
Un Programme d’Accueil est organisé pour les étudiants internationaux avant le début
de chaque semestre. Il permet aux étudiants de se familiariser avec les attentes et
les exigences qui seront celles de leurs enseignants à Sciences Po et de renforcer
leurs connaissances en français. Le programme comprend une séance d’information
et de bienvenue, des enseignements de français adaptés au niveau des étudiants,
des enseignements de méthodologie et une introduction à la ville de Paris. Les cours
permettent aux étudiants de se préparer aux différents types d’exercices oraux et écrits qui leur seront ensuite demandés.
Une équipe d’animation composée d’étudiants français et internationaux de Sciences
Po accompagne les étudiants dans leurs démarches (inscriptions, logement…) et
organise des activités leur permettant de se rencontrer et de découvrir Paris.
Ce programme a un coût additionnel : 170€ pour février 2009 (deux semaines, du 9 au 20 février 2009) et 250€ pour septembre 2009 (trois semaines avant la rentrée). Attention, le Programme d’Accueil est obligatoire pour certains programmes, renseignez-vous auprès du responsable de votre programme. Le MPA a un programme d’orientation spécifique.

The Welcome Programme
A Welcome Programme is organised for international students prior to the beginning
of every semester. It gives students the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the teaching style used at Sciences Po and to consolidate their French language skills. The programme includes a welcome information session, French language teaching, training in methodology and visits around Paris. The classes allow students to prepare for the types of oral and written exercises that they will be asked to do during the course of their studies. French and international students assist newcomers in their administrative tasks (registration, accommodation) and organise activities allowing them to get to know each other and discover the city. This programme has an additional cost of €170 for February 2009 (it lasts two weeks from 9 to 20 February 2009) and €250 for September 2009 (three weeks before the beginning of the semester). Please be aware that participation in the Welcome Programme is compulsory for some programmes.

Sciences Po Avenir est le service des stages, de l’orientation professionnelle

Les laboratoires de langues
Deux laboratoires de langues permettent un entraînement dans
les diverses langues pratiquées à Sciences Po (grammaire,
vocabulaire, compréhension auditive, TOEFL, IELTS, etc.).
Ces laboratoires permettent également aux étudiants de
bénéficier de séances de conseils pédagogiques assurées par
des enseignants de langues (anglais, allemand, arabe, espagnol,

L’atelier de cartographie
L’atelier de cartographie produit des documents graphiques
et cartographiques à la demande des enseignants et forme les
étudiants de 1er cycle et Master. Il diffuse pour un large public

l’espace mondial contemporain.

The foreign language lab
Sciences Po has two foreign language labs that provide
students with tools to improve their foreign language
skills (grammar, vocabulary, listening comprehension,
preparation for the TOEFL and IELTS tests, etc). These
labs also organise one-to-one language training given by
professional teachers (English, German, Arabic, Spanish,
Italian and French).

The cartography workshop
This workshop produces graphical and cartographical

A specially equipped studio offers students the
opportunity to improve their public speaking skills.
Individual coaching sessions using a camera are

Les associations
A Sciences Po, chaque année, plus de soixante
associations participent à l’animation de la vie
étudiante. Qu’elles soient politiques, humanitaires,

et de partager leurs centres d’intérêt avec l’ensemble

Each year, over sixty student societies help to liven
up student life at Sciences Po. No matter what the
topic is: political, humanitarian, artistic, they allow
students to get together to exchange ideas and share
their interests with the wider student community.
Active participation in student societies is very
much in line with Sciences Po’s overall educational
philosophy as it offers students opportunities

Congratulations, you have just been admitted to Sciences Po. The next few
years are going to be of significant importance for two reasons: Firstly, because these are important years. You are about to enter a multicultural institution,
where over one-third of students are international. I would encourage you to make the most of this rare opportunity not only to improve your language skills but above all to embrace new ways of thinking and living, and to set yourself new life
goals. Lecturers, professionals and academics will help you in this respect by broadening your intellectual horizons. Secondly, because these are years of discovery. For some of you, these will be the first time you have lived in Paris.
We are lucky to be located in the heart of the city, in Saint Germain des Prés, a district famous for its intellectual spirit. One of the many advantages of studying here is the garden situated within the very walls of Sciences Po; it is the ideal place to discuss with fellow students and to read over the summer months.

Sciences Po a le privilège d’être situé dans l’un des plus
agréables et prestigieux quartiers de Paris, Saint Germain des
Prés. Depuis le 17ème siècle, le quartier est le foyer du monde
littéraire et artistique parisien. Des peintres comme Delacroix
et Manet, des écrivains tels que Racine et Balzac vont ainsi, au
fil des siècles, forger l’identité de ce quartier. Cette tradition
se perpétuera, qui fera de Saint Germain des Prés, au milieu
du 20ème siècle, le centre de la vie culturelle et artistique de

Ses trois cafés « Les Deux Magots », « Le Flore » et la
« Brasserie Lipp », véritables symboles de la culture parisienne,

the district has been the centre of literary
and artistic life in Paris. Famous painters

La carte de séjour
Tous les étudiants qui viennent étudier à Sciences Po
pour une année entière et qui ne sont pas issus d’un
des pays membres de l’Union Européenne doivent
demander une carte de séjour afin de pouvoir résider
en France. Sciences Po met en place un service de
liaison entre la Préfecture de Police de Paris et les
étudiants afin de leur éviter de se déplacer euxmêmes
à la Préfecture. Ce service est offert par la
Direction des Affaires Internationales et des Echanges
(DAIE) de Sciences Po.

Attention, ce service traite uniquement les demandes de
carte de séjour pour les étudiants qui vivent à Paris « intramuros
» (code postal qui commence par 75). Les étudiants

des informations sur les démarches à effectuer.

Upon arrival, all non-European Union nationals
coming to study in France for one whole year must
apply for a ‘carte de séjour’ (residency permit).
Sciences Po’s International Office provides a liaison
service with the ‘Préfecture de Police de Paris’, so
that students can obtain this card directly at Sciences
Po.

Les Centres pour les Etudes en France (CEF)
Les Centres pour les Etudes en France (CEF), présents
dans une vingtaine de pays, offrent des informations
sur les études en France, centralisent les procédures de
candidature et facilitent l’obtention des visas étudiant.
La procédure d’admission par les CEF a un coût variable
entre 70€ et 230€, selon les pays, mais le coût du visa
étudiant est réduit de moitié.

Centres pour les Etudes en France (CEF)
The CEFs, present in more than twenty countries around
the world, offer information on studying in France,
administer the application process centrally and assist
students in obtaining a visa.
The admission procedure through the CEFs costs between
€70 and €230 depending on the country; however the cost
for a student visa is half the normal price.
La sécurité sociale
En France, tous les étudiants âgés de moins de 28 ans doivent
obligatoirement s’inscrire à la sécurité sociale étudiante. Cette
inscription est valable toute l’année universitaire et coûte
195€ (tarif pour 2008-2009).
Il existe des dérogations pour les étudiants français de moins
de 20 ans et les étudiants membres de l’espace économique
européen (EEE), disposant de la carte européenne d’assurance
maladie en cours de validité. Cette carte doit être demandée
15 jours à un mois avant votre départ pour la France auprès de
votre organisme local de sécurité sociale.
Les étudiants boursiers du CROUS et les boursiers Eiffel sont
exonérés de cette cotisation. Les étudiants bénéficiaires de la
bourse Emile-Boutmy doivent payer cette cotisation.
Les étudiants âgés de moins de 28 ans, qui n’appartiennent
pas à un pays membre de l’EEE, doivent obligatoirement
souscrire à la sécurité sociale étudiante et payer la cotisation,
même s’ils disposent d’une assurance privée. Ne pouvant pas
être affiliés par Sciences Po à la sécurité sociale étudiante,
les étudiants âgés de plus de 28 ans doivent présenter une
assurance privée couvrant tous les risques pendant toute
l’année universitaire (1er septembre 2009 - 30 septembre
2010).
Social security
In France, every student under 28 years old is required to
register for the student social security system. Registration
is valid for the whole year and costs €195 (2008-2009).
The only exceptions to this obligation are: French students
under 20 years old and students from the European
Economic Area who are holders of the European health
insurance card. This card should be requested at the social

Students who have been awarded a CROUS or Eiffel
scholarship are exempt from paying for social security.
However, this does not apply to students with an Emile-
Boutmy scholarship.
Students under 28 years old from a country outside of the
European Economic Area must subscribe to the student
social security system and pay for it, whether they have
private insurance or not.
Students over 28 years old are not eligible for the student
social security system through Sciences Po. They are
therefore required to take out fully comprehensive private
insurance. This insurance must cover the full study-period
from September 1st 2009 to September 30th 2010.

La mutuelle
La mutuelle vient en complément
de la sécurité sociale et permet des
remboursements plus avantageux des

Le Programme d’Accueil
Un Programme d’Accueil est organisé pour les étudiants internationaux avant le début
de chaque semestre. Il permet aux étudiants de se familiariser avec les attentes et
les exigences qui seront celles de leurs enseignants à Sciences Po et de renforcer
leurs connaissances en français. Le programme comprend une séance d’information
et de bienvenue, des enseignements de français adaptés au niveau des étudiants,
des enseignements de méthodologie et une introduction à la ville de Paris. Les cours
permettent aux étudiants de se préparer aux différents types d’exercices oraux et écrits qui leur seront ensuite demandés.
Une équipe d’animation composée d’étudiants français et internationaux de Sciences
Po accompagne les étudiants dans leurs démarches (inscriptions, logement…) et
organise des activités leur permettant de se rencontrer et de découvrir Paris.
Ce programme a un coût additionnel : 170€ pour février 2009 (deux semaines, du 9 au 20 février 2009) et 250€ pour septembre 2009 (trois semaines avant la rentrée). Attention, le Programme d’Accueil est obligatoire pour certains programmes, renseignez-vous auprès du responsable de votre programme. Le MPA a un programme d’orientation spécifique.

The Welcome Programme
A Welcome Programme is organised for international students prior to the beginning
of every semester. It gives students the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the teaching style used at Sciences Po and to consolidate their French language skills. The programme includes a welcome information session, French language teaching, training in methodology and visits around Paris. The classes allow students to prepare for the types of oral and written exercises that they will be asked to do during the course of their studies. French and international students assist newcomers in their administrative tasks (registration, accommodation) and organise activities allowing them to get to know each other and discover the city. This programme has an additional cost of €170 for February 2009 (it lasts two weeks from 9 to 20 February 2009) and €250 for September 2009 (three weeks before the beginning of the semester). Please be aware that participation in the Welcome Programme is compulsory for some programmes.

Deux laboratoires de langues permettent un entraînement dans

Les associations
A Sciences Po, chaque année, plus de soixante

How to log into Sciences Po's wireless network (wifi)
In order to use the Sciences Po wireless network, you have to activate your e-mail account first (see previous post for instructions).
Once you have activated your e-mail account, you can log into the Sciences Po wireless network:
1. in your computer's network management program, choose the wireless network "Sciences Po"
2. open your internet browser: you should be redirected automatically to the login page of the Sciences Po network
3. enter your username and password - they are the same as those for your ENTG e-mail
4. if you are not redirected to the login page, please check if you have activated your firewall and deactivate it if necessary

username (“identifiant”): your student number
password (“mot de passe”): either the last 6 digits of your student number or your date of birth: DDMMYY (example: if you are born on September 20, 1988, your password will be 200988)
The main page of your "espace étudiant" will open: at the very bottom of the page, click on the link “pour ouvrir votre messagerie Sciences Po”
2. You will be redirected to http://entg.sciences-po.fr/ and click on “activer votre compte” to the right of the Sciences Po logo on this page
A page with text opens, click again on “activer votre compte” at the bottom of this page
The following page asks you to insert your “identifiant” and “mot de passe”. These are the same as for your espace étudiant (see 1)
3. Verify your registration information
The next page shows a summary of your registration information. Please check especially if your name and birth date are correct since this is the information that will show on your transcripts. If any of your data is wrong, you can still activate your e-mail account but please contact the Sciences Po administration at support.scolarite@sciences-po.fr in order to correct your data
4. Confirm your registration
You will then once again be asked to set a password, this time for the e-mail service
The following page shows the conditions of use for the Sciences Po e-mail service. Click on the box “Je déclare avoir pris connaissance de la charte informatique de Sciences Po et j'en accepte les conditions” and set a security question and answer in case you forget your password.
